AR, also known as Accelerated Reader, is a program Coonley uses to help encourage and monitor independent reading. Our 6th grade students currently have about 15 minutes 4 days a week to read independently, hopefully for fun. When they finish a book, they take a short comprehension quiz to ensure they understood what they read. This all goes towards their AR grade.
Each quarter, students have a point and quiz goal to meet. The quiz goal is 85% or higher average on the quizzes taken. The point goal is based on their reading levels and is different for each student. We wrote down the goals in the front of their reading notebooks.
Starting this quarter, students are expected to read a minimum of 20 minutes a night. This cannot include a book that is assigned in reading. AR book are self selected, free reading books. It can be any book from home, school, the book store or the public library. If you want to find out the points book is worth or the book level to see if it is appropriate for your student go to https://www.arbookfind.com/UserType.aspx?RedirectURL=%2fdefault.aspx . You can enter any book title and it will pull up the information. AR reading can be done anywhere!
