This week, students will be receiving their Read to Succeed Logs. This is an optional reading challenge where the students are requested to read for 6 hours/360 minutes. This will be due for 4th grade by January 21st 2017. The 25 minutes we read a day or the time spent in class does note count towards the required minutes. Those who complete the challenge and turn in the log, will receive a ticket for Six Flags to use this summer! The log must be filled out and turned in to receive the ticket. Happy Reading!

Recorders were handed out in music today. A letter was sent home with them about care and maintenance. The letter is attached below for reference in case it misses you. Please make sure to have the recorders on Mondays and Thursdays, as those are our music days. As we go into the second quarter, we set new reading goals. I will conference with our students this week on their goal as well as how to attain that goal for the quarter.
As many of you know, AR is a comprehension development program. As students complete books, they take a quiz and their reading levels grow. The books do not have to be from school. Almost all books have an AR level and points. If you would like to look up the AR information for a book that does not have it in it, please go to http://www.arbookfind.com. Once there, select parent or student. Then you can enter the author or title to find the book information. Though you can read almost any book, the quizzes can only be taken at school. We have a 15-25 minute block for students to work on AR by either silently reading or taking a quiz. I also require students to read at least one informational book a month. I make these available for many reading levels in the classroom. The "Who Was . . ." series is a very popular nonfiction series that students enjoy. Another popular information series is the "You wouldn't want to be . . ." series. To make homework more effective for both the students and myself, we will start having weekly math check points. The packet will still be due on the day of the test, but every Thursday I will look over 2 out of the 3 pages that should be completed to check for understanding. A few of the problems that show that deepest understanding will be graded for correctness. This will help make sure that the homework is successfully working to cement the skills learned in class, and will also provide another way to check understanding. These weekly check-ins will also help make sure students are on a successful schedule to complete the packet. Please make sure to have our students bring in their packets Thursday.
With our new reading unit we will be structuring the lesson differently. Today we introduced the new novel and the project that goes with it. Tomorrow (Tuesday 11/8) we will be focusing on the recipe memoir. Students will use their interview to create and outline for their memoir. This will help students organize this information when they are writing paragraphs. Thursday 11/10 students will be in discussion groups. To prepare they need to complete the assigned reading, write a summary and a discussion question. The discussion will be assessed by students using the rubric in their folder. All work is in the grey paper folder that will travel between home school, hopefully helping students keep track of all the parts of the reading. The first Bloom Folder project will be due next Friday 11/18. - I must be from levels 1-3.
Today, we received our math packets for unit 4. If your student doesn't have theirs yet, they were finishing their test and will receive it tomorrow. This packet takes us through November and connects to the last unit. We will be working on double digit multiplication. Attached is the cover page that outlines when each page should be done. The test will be on Tuesday, November 29th, which is when the packet is due. This gives the students the opportunity to use the packet and work to study. If a student is having troubles, circle the area and I am happy to help them before or after school from 8 am to 4 pm. The packet is for a grade, both a completion as well as spot checked on certain problems for correctness. The packets help practice skills and ensure that the math skill learned that day is retained. I try to get them back in a timely manner. On Tuesday, November 15th we will be going to Facet Film Festival. This is part of the International Children's Film Festival. The students will be watching a series of short film and will write a review about one of the films. The trip is midday, students will be eating at school before we leave. You may wish to send a snack for the afternoon along with the lunch. We will depart 11:15. The show is at 11:45 and lasts 80 minutes. We will return to school after the movie. We will let the students eat their snacks while we write about the field trip.
We are creating a classroom cookbook. Students will be using the writing process to create a finished piece of writing that will be shared with the class in the book. Their writing will include these 4 sections;
