Vocabulary Costume Assignment
As you know fourth grade does not dress up for Halloween. As part of our holiday fun we will be having a vocabulary costume guessing game at our party. Please read the assignment below and help your child prepare for an exciting vocabulary adventure.
We will be reading Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary Disaster by Debra Frasier. The story is about a girl named Sage who has misheard and misunderstood one of Mrs. Page's weekly vocabulary words. Her error leads to a humbling catastrophe: a momentous tragedy, in front of the entire class. Sage turns her vocabulary disaster: an event bringing great misfortune, into a triumph: a true success.
In the story the school has an annual vocabulary parade where students dress up as their favorite vocabulary words.
For the Halloween party students need to:
Choose appropriate word and turn in their word on Friday, October 23th, so can make a class list of the words they will have to guess at the party.
Make and bring a simple costume on Friday, October 30th showing their vocabulary word. The costume can be as simple as a paper hat decorated with pictures that highlight their vocabulary word. For example, they could be the word precipitation and have pictures of rain, snow and hail coming out of their hat.
Write a description of their word, which they will read to the class on Halloween (speaking grade). The class will use their description to guess their word. The description should not include the word.
HAVE FUN AND BE CREATIVE!
