Also, thank you to the parents who planned and attended the class holiday party. The students had a blast participating and it was fun to watch and be a part of. We have officially finished reading Seedfolks. Students have a paragraph TAGC response due tomorrow. Both classes have had 30 plus minutes to work on the paragra in class. The paragraph is due tomorrow. A copy of the paragraph and TAGC organizer are attached below. The quiz is wroth less, as we will be doing some project work to replace some of the test elements. 304 has already started on this and 301 will start tomorrow. Students are to pick three projects that show understanding and a level of synthesis for Seedfolks. The project sheet is also attached below.
Novel study: We will be completing our Seedfolk novel this week. There will be a small project next week, some of which will be completed at home as homework.
Wordly Wise: We are currently on Wordly Wise 8 and the test will be Friday the 14th. I have continued to discuss with students the importance of studying in a way that works for them individually. For this lesson, student are allowed to take the test as soon as they are ready. So students may take the test early if they feel prepared. Otherwise, the test will be taken Friday. After that we will be done with Wordly Wise until after the winter break. Social Sciences/Writing: We started our Ancient Americas research project last week. Students are currently in the throws of research. For this project we are working with paper research only. We have gone through how to use a book or article to find specific information. We are also practicing how to take notes when we research to avoid plagiarism. We will complete preliminary research stages early this week and start to learn how to organize research and thinking into informational writing. The writing aspect of this project will be completed before the winter break. I talked with our students this week about study habits and how every students has different ways of studying that work for them. We gave examples such as Wordly Wise book exercises, quizzlet, flashcards, short videos or posters that use the words etc. From now on with Wordly Wise, studying will be mostly independent. I will still have at least 2 days in class that we discuss the more challenging words and answer any questions that students have.
If a student gets an A or B they get the homework credit because what they did to study worked for them. If a student scores lower than a B, I will conference with them and ask to see what they did for homework so that we can work together to find a study habit that will benefit them personally. On the flip side we also discussed that getting an A or B does not mean you do not have to study, it simply shows us that however we studied worked for us. Students still need to be practicing and working with the words, they just get to choose how. If you have any questions, as always, please let me know. Our next test over lesson 7 is coming up next Wednesday. In order to prepare for 5th grade Chromebook use, we give students the option to take the wordly wise test on the Chromebook. This is an option. Students can still choose to take the test on pencil and paper.
If students do not get an A or B on the test, they loose the option to take the test on the Chromebook and must take the paper and pencil version. The paper version allows me to help students slow down and double check work. If a students gets a C or lower, they will have to get an A or B on least two paper tests in a row before getting the option to try and take a test on the Chromebook again. Test corrections can still be done, even for online tests. If a student would like to do test corrections for an online test, please email me at [email protected] or have the student ask me in class. This week, students will be receiving their Read to Succeed Logs if they have not already. This is an optional reading challenge where the students are requested to read for 6 hours/360 minutes. This will be due for 4th grade by February 22nd. The 20 minutes we read a day or the time spent in class does note count towards the required minutes. Those who complete the challenge and turn in the log, will receive a ticket for Six Flags to use this summer! The log must be filled out and turned in with adult signatures to receive the ticket. Happy Reading! Attached below is a copy of the log and letter.
We are excited for our upcoming field trip to the International Children's Film Festival! The field trip is this coming Tuesday on November 13th.
